Mangrove Nursery

Mangrove Nursery

Mangroves are nature’s nurseries sheltering baby fish, filtering water, and protecting the coast. We’ve built a shoreline breakwater where over 200 red mangroves are growing strong. As their roots spread, they create a living barrier that boosts biodiversity and stabilizes the canal’s delicate ecosystem.

Background

Mangroves are the quiet architects of coastal health—stabilizing shorelines, filtering water, and providing essential nursery habitat for countless marine species. Our Mangrove Nursery was created to restore these vital ecosystems along the canal and nearby coastlines. More than 200 red mangroves are currently growing in a custom-built breakwater system designed to protect young plants while allowing natural tidal flow. As their roots expand, they create intricate underwater habitat that attracts juvenile fish, strengthens biodiversity, and improves water quality. This living shoreline now serves as both a restoration tool and an educational platform, showing how mangroves can help safeguard Curaçao’s coast for generations to come.
