Mission
Our mission is to restore and protect Curaçao’s (and in extension: the regions’) marine ecosystems through hands-on conservation, research, and education. We believe in science- and data-based action, local engagement, and long-term impact. From rebuilding coral reefs to nurturing endangered species like the Queen Conch, but also to reinvent the way we do coastal construction in a responsible way. Our work is aimed at ensuring the ocean’s rich biodiversity is preserved for future generations.
History
The Reef Research Foundation was born out of the Curaçao Sea Aquarium’s long-standing commitment to ocean conservation. It all began in 1985, when founder Adriaan “Dutch” Schrier opened the Sea Aquarium with one clear goal: to share the wonders and beauty of our ocean with everyone on Curaçao. That same spirit of connection and care still drives our work today. What started as small-scale habitat restoration has grown into a professional, multi-project effort focused on rebuilding marine ecosystems. From coral outplanting and mangrove nurseries to the Queen Conch Hatchery, our projects are rooted in science, fueled by passion, and guided by the belief that we have a responsibility to take care of nature.
Sea Aquarium Park Curaçao
Curaçao Sea Aquarium is not “just” a park with playful dolphins or beautiful displays—it was built on a vision of respect of the ocean. Guided by that original philosophy, the park has always aimed to honor marine life rather than simply exhibit it. Every animal, every habitat, and every project reflects a commitment to learning, teaching, and discovering more about our ocean. While it operates as a business, they strive for a balance where income is reinvested into Curaçao’s coastal restoration, scientific research, education, and community benefit. This blend of curiosity, responsibility, and sustainability is at the heart of everything and it’s the foundation on which the Reef Research Foundation continues to grow.
