Gorgonian Fragmentation Project
Soft corals like gorgonians are often damaged by storms or anchor strikes—but they can recover. Our team rescues broken or stressed gorgonians, fragments the healthy parts, and secures them to natural rock bases for regrowth. Once healed, they’re returned to the wild, forming a beautiful underwater forest that provides shelter and structure for countless marine species.
Background
Gorgonians—soft corals like sea fans and sea whips—are essential for healthy Caribbean reefs, yet they are easily damaged by storms, currents, and human activity. Through our Gorgonian Fragmentation Project, we rescue broken or stressed colonies and recover the healthy sections for regrowth. These fragments are mounted onto natural substrates and cared for in controlled conditions until they are ready to be returned to the reef. Once replanted, they help rebuild the vertical structure that shelters fish, improves water flow, and increases biodiversity. This project strengthens both the resilience and beauty of Curaçao’s shallow reef systems, offering a practical pathway to restoring soft-coral habitats.
